“But he stationed himself in the middle of the field, defended it…
So the Lord brought about a great victory.”
2 Samuel 23:12

In 2 Samuel 23 we find a whole list of colorful characters—men who were distinguished by great exploits of faith, trust, and courage. Two that stand out are Eleazar and Shammah. In both cases, these men courageously stood their ground for God and his people, and it says GOD brought about a great victory. That word stood is explosive in this text. The Hebrew word is yatsab. It means to set or station oneself against an enemy, or to stand alongside someone else against an opponent.

Oh, how I love that thought! Here are two men who learned the life-changing lesson that when you are teamed up with God, you are always the majority. It’s a wonderful illustration of how God and man cooperate. Man doing what he is responsible to do…and God doing what man can never do. Is it any wonder these same men were part of that famous trio that went into Bethlehem to gather water for David, while under the siege of the Philistines? What inspires me about this glimpse of courage is that their assurance was not in themselves, but on God’s ability to fulfill His plan for His people—the confidence that is built upon the character and promises of God and then the life that moves out in that confidence.

Corrie Ten Boom used to say, “God never has problems—He has plans!” That seems to be the mindset that drove Eleazar and Shammah. They saw their problem as part of God’s plan, and depended on Him to provide the resources for their victory.

What a tremendous example for us as we stand in our own battles (wage battle against our own foes?). Here we stand—some of us are tired, some are weary of the battle, some are distracted by what still needs to be done. But beloved, as we stand our ground in prayer, in obedience, in faith and confidence, we can be assured He will give the victory.

I pray these thoughts would be like “water from the well of Bethlehem.” May you be encouraged and comforted in all that lies ahead. Beloved, stand your ground, trust steadfastly on Him, and anything that challenges you will only serve to strengthen your faith. Watch Him lead the way to victory. Remember Jesus said…”In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer”—i.e., Take courage! The victory is Mine! —“I have overcome the world,” John 16:33. Don’t allow weariness to sway you; don’t let doubt discourage you. Be strong and of good courage. “He who called you is faithful…who also will do it” (1 Thessalonians 5:24)!
